Fire glass can be used in both propane and natural gas fire pits. The one recommendation we have for propane fire pits is to use glass half an inch thick or larger. This allows propane, a heavier gas, to rise more easily through the fire glass pieces.

Fire glass acts as a permeablefiller for gas fire pits and fireplaces. This means that when it's placed over a gas burner, fire glass allows the gas to pass through it and fuel a flame on the surface of the glass. With natural gas, the gas is lighter than air, so it easily rises to the surface of the glass.

Are lava rocks or glass better for fire pits?

Fire glass is a better choice than lava rock if you want to add color, sparkle, and sophistication to your gas fire feature. Lava rock is a better choice than fire glass if you're on a tight budget or are looking to create a rustic feel.

How long does fire glass last in a fire pit?

It won't melt, burn or discolor. It will last forever within your fire pit or fireplace. Like all glass it can be broken so be careful when you're putting it in your fire feature and if you move it from one place to another.

Can you roast marshmallows over fire glass?

The bottom line is, cooking over a propane fire pit is perfectly safe – just keep the media (lava rock and/or fireglass) and burner free of food drippings, dirt, debris, etc., to help maintain a clean flame that is free of smoke.

What do you put under fire glass?

Yes, you can cook hotdogs over a gas fire pit. You'll want a grill grate or a utensil to hold your hotdog over the fire pit. It won't produce a lot of grease though.

How deep should the fire glass be? Ideally, your fire pit should be filled with fire glass to a depth of 1” to 2”. You want to have enough fire glass so that your burner isn't visible. On the flip side, creating a layer that's more than 2” deep is unnecessary—and quite frankly, a waste of money.
