Does cardboard need to be shredded for compost?

But in my experience card needs shredding. If it's not shred, large sheets will stick together in a big damp mass.

  • Bioplastics.
  • Styrofoam.
  • Oil — except in small amounts (for example, greasy pizza boxes are usually ok if you scrape off food bits)

  • Cooked foods.

Can you put soil on top of cardboard?

You can add soil or mulch on top to reinforce it, too. The cardboard will suppress the weeds and eventually break down into the soil, adding useful organic matter.
